'Trytin' night

We have a fridge that we don't run 24/7. As a result, our provisioning for the Pacific needed to include tins that did not remind us of dog food if we were to remain meat eaters and not rely on the wonders of refrigeration.

Dylan came up with the cringe inducing name of 'Trytin night'. We invited a group of yachties round with strict instructions to bring but one tin of a locally available product at a reasonable price. The main objective being to allow people to try a bunch of tinned goods at once rather than eating 5 nights of tinned food in a country where red meat is a wonderful price of $3 per lb. We made a pot of rice and heated the tins and everyone sampled everything from tinned chicken breast, to baked beans. No herbs and spices were allowed to be added, just ate it as it came. Pork and beans and pasta sauces "with Carne" proved to be fairly lacking in "carne". On closer inspection the carne part was 0.8% in most cases! But good ol Dinty Moore still makes a mean beef stew and the chicken breasts resulted in at least 4 yachts buying a good few tins each. Unfortunately each tin was on sale in a different store resulting in additional trips to and fro but well worth it so we don't end up involuntary vegetarians en route to New Zealand!

Might even try earn a commission for our "tupperware party" canned goods idea...
